New Baby Trend: The Sip and See
First of all, what is a sip and see? As a modern alternative to a baby shower, the sip and see is an opportunity for new parents to literally sip (some cocktails!) and see the baby in a relaxed environment. Mom and day invite friends and family over (on their own terms!) to see and fawn over their new baby. While baby showers have a tendency to lean towards the stuffy side, with requisite party games and fancy finger sandwiches, the sip and see allows for a new mom's inner circle to come over and nibble on snacks and enjoy a glass of champers while getting a sneak peek at the little bundle.
The best time to host a sip and see is a month or so after the new baby arrives. This gives mom and dad time to get acclimate and adjust. It's really up to the parents how much "seeing" of the baby happens. The first months are always a little nerve-wracking and exposing baby to potential germs can be scary. Moms love putting baby in the DockATot Deluxe baby lounger for a sip and see for this reason. DockATot's built-in bumpers create the perfect barrier between baby and all of the well-wishers. You can also appoint grandma, a best friend or a sitter to be the baby watcher and make sure no one gets too touchy feely during the event.
Gift giving at a sip and see depends on a couple things. If you had a baby shower already, then don't expect a whole lot of gifts at your sip and see. But as many moms are forgoing baby showers these days, a sip and see is a way for friends to gift the new parents after baby is born. Many times it's difficult for parents to gauge their needs and wants before baby arrives, so having a sip and see allows for time to update the baby registry, too. This is also a time to add some more fun and stylish baby gifts onto the baby registry along with some new mom essentials.
We asked Jill Smith, a talented designer (pictured above) who creates beautiful birth announcements, invitations and stationery for Shutterfly (see one of her adorable birth announcement designs below), to give us her advice on the best gifts for a sip and see. Jill recently designed the birthday party invitations for her niece (Jill's sister-in-law is Tiffani Thiessen, a DockATot mom.)
"It’s incredibly heart-warming to watch friends become mothers and fathers, and couples become families," says Smith. "Hosting a 'Sip and See' can be a great opportunity to come together and ooooh and aaah over this new life and to share some love and stories all around. And of course, sharing gifts too. I’ve compiled some of my favorites (and some I wish I knew about 7 years ago!). These lovely items are meant to help, clothe, feed, entertain, calm, enjoy and add a little beauty to their home." Here, her picks for the most stylish sip and see gifts to delight any family.
Land of Nod Wee Workout Baby Gym
This is a stylish acrylic alternative to a traditional baby play station. "I love the modern feel of this, mixed with the cozy animals to gaze at!" says Smith.
Freshly Picked Moccasins
The most stylish babies around are sporting Freshly Picked mocs on their little feet. Made with super soft leather and easy on/easy off elastic, these adorable shoes are newborn must haves.
DockATot Co-Sleeper and Infant Lounger
"OF COURSE! I wish I had these for my babies when they were babies," says Smith. DockATot Deluxe was made to mimic the womb and helps babies feel safe, secure and snuggled, which lets them sleep for hours and hours!
Milkbarn Muslin Swaddle
"I adore the packaging here as well as the product. If you are in a hurry, consider this gift wrapped as is!" says Smith.
Wunway Happy Cloud Purse
"This little cloud would make a beautiful addition to a newborn little girl's room. And later she could grow into really using it as a purse," says Smith.
Gracie Cat, Liberty of London Edition
"This company makes all sorts of lovely animals with witty fabrics and outfits," says Smith.
