Model. Blogger. Entrepreneur. Vegan. And, of course… Mother.
These are just a few of the words that describe our latest Dock Mama, Gloria Mamurov. After ditching a career in the Big Apple, this mother of 4 has found herself happily at home on the west coast, raising her family in sunny Los Angeles, a city she loves for it’s diversity and access to endlessly inspiring landscape. As her priorities have shifted over the years (thanks to that glorious little journey we call “motherhood”), Gloria has found focus and happiness through spirituality, fitness, and a vegan lifestyle. She was recently featured on the cover of Pregnancy & Newborn magazine, then pregnant with her now 6 week old daughter Eva. Through her writing and social media presence, she hopes to inspire other young women to do the same.
DOCKATOT: First of all congratulations on the beautiful addition to your family! Tell us about your children.
GLORIA: Thank you so much we are so happy and in love! I have a son Jaden who is 7 and half, my twin girls Mia and Jolie who are 6 and a half (the half part is very important!), and little Eva is now 6 weeks young.
DOCKATOT: You’re a Cali girl now! Tell us a little bit about life before you ended up on the West Coast?
GLORIA: I was born and raised in Sweden, Stockholm. My parents are from Morocco and as a child I traveled a lot through Europe and spent my summer days in Morocco. I loved having a multicultural upbringing. I lived my most important years in New York. That’s where I basically became an adult.
I received my Bachelor’s degree in Fashion Marketing and I quickly started my own business in entertainment and nightlife. I am an entrepreneur and creator at heart, and have always loved to work with my hands. I spent most of my time in New York as a costume designer and working in the entertainment businesses.
After ten years, New York became a very stressful place for me and my family, so we decided it was time for a change. We packed up and drove across the country to give California a try! It’s been two years since our spontaneous adventure to the west coast and it’s been a wonderful place to raise children. I love how diverse it is; it reminds me of my childhood because I feel like I'm in both Europe and Morocco at the same time. Everything around us is so scenic and inspiring. My husband and I work together from various locations around LA and it’s important for us to be inspired by our environment.
DOCKATOT: What inspired you to go vegan?
GLORIA: It was during my time in NYC that I started to feel the need for change. I became more focused on trying to live a healthy lifestyle. I’d been an “on and off” vegetarian/pescatarian since 2006 but found it difficult at first since I wasn’t very educated on it. When I met my husband, who is vegetarian, that sealed the deal for me. We loved cooking together and I became really passionate about the vegetarian lifestyle through this shared experience.
Then, about two years ago, my friend Julia Kravets opened the first vegan creperie, Little Choc Apothecary. She used to throw these little Russian tea parties and we’d try her scrumptious vegan baked goods. I thought, “if I can enjoy this stuff, I could definitely enjoy other vegan foods.”
I’ll admit it was easier transitioning to vegetarian, than full on vegan, but the more I learned about the dairy and meat industries, the more grossed out I became and I knew it was time to take the next step. I continued to explore new flavors and experiment in the kitchen. Once you start, it’s very quick and easy to cook and stay vegan.
DOCKATOT: Are your children vegan as well?
GLORIA: My children eat everything I eat. I adapted this pretty early into their lives so they appreciate everything and they also like to educate other kids about how avoiding processed foods and being vegan is a healthy way to live. Some of their favorite foods are homemade pizza and gluten-free vegan mac and "cheese". They love all the baked goods I make for them, and especially our “nicecream”, which is homemade pure ice “cream” made from frozen fruits.
DOCKATOT: What's a typical day like for you?
GLORIA: I wake up early and try to have a quiet moment before the kids & baby wake up. I like to meditate for at least 5 to 10 minutes. I make sure kids have a nutritional breakfast which I normally document. I take pictures of everything I make in the kitchen!
Then from there, every day is a little different for us. My husband and I both work for ourselves so we like to get out of the house and explore to get inspired, whether it’s a walk on the beach or a hike. We love to check out all the beautiful places Los Angeles has to offer.
DOCKATOT: What do you do for "me" time?
GLORIA: I love working out, taking a bath with candles, or just doing my own nails and hair. I cherish my routines and enjoy making my own hair remedies and skincare. Being vegan isn't only about what you eat, it's also what you put on your body.
DOCKATOT: You’re very focused on spirituality. Tell us about how you practice spirituality and meditation.
GLORIA: I believe in a strong universe and that we have the universe within us. Life is a game and we are meant to grow from each challenge. I practice meditation and yoga which makes me feel Zen and in tune with life and myself. I believe that we don't appreciate the present as much as we should. So many people live in the past or in the future; I try to always stay in the moment and enjoy everything. I practice gratitude everyday; it’s such an important feeling to have.
DOCKATOT: You have so much going and and yet you manage to stay so fit & effortlessly stylish!
GLORIA: I love fashion. I keep up with the trends on style.com and just love to funk things up. I love all the color in LA. In New York, I was all about black! I love shopping on a low budget and mixing and matching. My favorite stores are Buffalo Exchange, Forever 21, H&M and Zara.
Like meditation, fitness is so important to me to stay sane and calm. I crave the endorphins that I get from sweating it out. Overall my health and my happiness make me a better person and mother.
DOCKATOT: What are some of your favorite products right now - baby, beauty, or otherwise?
GLORIA: I’m all about a great pump! Right now, I’m using the Medela Sonata. It's small and wireless and so easy to use. It's quiet with a very strong suction! I love my DockATot. Eva has been co-sleeping with us and it's so easy for us to bring everywhere. It keeps her happy and calm no matter where we are, and that makes me happy! Another mom product I’m loving for the baby is the Comotomo bottle. The nipple on it is very much like the breast nipple. Oh, and the healing balm from Honest Co is amazing! I used it on a diaper rash and it worked miracles.
As far as beauty products go, I consider the body a sponge. Your skin absorbs everything you put on it and so I buy all-natural products or get creative with making my own skincare products. My favorite cream to use is 100% pure shea butter to which I add different essential oils - I use it all over my body. Apple cider vinegar is also very useful. I drink a spoonful every morning in a warm cup of water, and I use it as a face toner.
