Breastfeeding can be one of the most confusing and difficult aspects of being a new mama. We spoke to breastfeeding expert and certified lactation consultant Rebecca Agi of Best Milk LA about why breastfeeding is worth the effort and why she loves DockATot to help facilitate nursing.

Why is breastfeeding so important?
Breastfeeding has so many wonderful benefits. Babies who are breastfed are at a lower risk of developing ear infections, asthma, childhood Leukemia, SIDS and upper respiratory infections. Breast milk provides babies with perfect nutrition that is specifically designed to meet their needs and strengthen their immune system. Breastfeeding also lowers a woman's risk of developing cervical, breast and ovarian cancer. Studies show that breastfeeding may also reduce the risk of developing type-2 diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, and cardiovascular disease. I can go on for days about the benefits of breastfeeding but for the sake of this post we’ll leave it at that.

Tell us why you love the DockATot and how it can help with breastfeeding?
As a lactation consultant, I’m always on the lookout for safe, well-designed products that allow parents to keep their baby close. Whether you’re co-sleeping at night or just want to keep your baby nearby during the day, DockATot provides a safe, portable sleep environment which helps make feedings as convenient as possible!

What do you tell parents that say "I can't breastfeed but I want to!"
If a mother is determined to breastfeed her baby but feels she is unable to, my goal would be to get to the root of the problem. Is she suffering from low milk supply? Is her baby unable to latch? Is something hurting? Pinpointing the exact issue would allow me to develop a plan-of-care that would fit her needs and get her one step closer to reaching her breastfeeding goals.

Tell us about your classes services at Best Milk LA?
I offer in-home, private lactation consultations in Los Angeles as well as phone and video consultations for mothers across the country. I also offer in-home weight checks for newborns so moms can rest assured their baby is gaining weight appropriately without always having to schedule a doctor’s appointment. This year I’ll be adding classes and more nutrition-related services for new moms.

What are some of the biggest misconceptions that you address in your classes consults?
So many women assume they have to eat a special diet to produce good milk for their baby. There are no foods that must be eaten or avoided entirely during breastfeeding. Eating a variety of foods helps expose your baby to different tastes and flavors, which can help him or her accept a wider range of foods later on.

What inspires you?
My clients are my biggest inspiration. Breastfeeding is definitely not easy, which is why lactation consultants exist. Most of the time new moms call me when something is hurting, isn’t going well, or when they just need a boost of confidence. Providing individualized support and gentle encouragement is one of the most rewarding parts of being a lactation consultant.

Words to live by?
This one is especially relevant to breastfeeding: If it aint broke, don’t fix it!
