Over the years, though, we’ve found there are a few questions that come up again and again.
Here are the top 12 most asked questions, and, of course, their answers!
DockATot Deluxe and DockATot Grand are designed to be comfy and ultra-reliable lounging docks for little ones ages 0-36 months. You can use DockATot for co-sleeping, supervised tummy time, play time, snuggle time, supervised naps, as a changing station, or really just any time you need to put baby down in a comforting spot. The Grand is a cozy spot for toddlers to sleep in overnight and is ideal for easing the crib to bed transition. DockATot is lightweight and incredibly easy to travel with. DockATot provides a cozy and non-toxic environment for tots anywhere they go.
The DockATot Deluxe is intended for babies 0-8 months or 5- 22 lbs, and is to be used for lounging, supervised napping, supervised tummy time, safe co-sleeping, changing diapers, cuddling and playing.
The DockATot Grand is for tots 9-36 months or 22-40 lbs, and can be used for all the same activities as the Deluxe as well as a way to facilitate comfortable sleeping in toddler beds and single beds. The bumpers on the Grand act as a bed guard for young kids, allowing them to settle more easily in a bigger bed and make an easier crib to bed transition.
One of our trademarks – "Reinventing the womb" – indicates that the DockATot is supposed to be snug. Our experience is that parents seem to think the baby has outgrown the Deluxe size way before baby is uncomfortable.
The design includes clasps that lengthen the legs of the DockATot Deluxe, so babies can get longer use out of it. DockATot was created to mimic the womb, so the snugger the fit, the better it works. The thicker density of the Deluxe dock (versus the Grand, which is softer) provides a safer and more supportive environment for younger babies and is also better for tummy time. Many parents use the Deluxe size beyond the 9 month mark, up to 12 months, with the clasp open to make more room lengthwise. The feeling of snugness is very comforting for the child. It's as if the child is being held in a sense.
We do not recommend the larger size until baby is 9 months old. Many parents use the Deluxe size beyond the 9 month mark, as you can unbuckle the bottom to make more room. DockATot was created to mimic the womb, so the snugger the fit, the better. The thicker density of the Deluxe dock (versus the Grand, which is softer) provides a more supportive environment for younger babies and is also better for tummy time.
Each piece of the dock is washable, care instructions are below for each piece (for more detailed instructions please refer to the label on the bottom of your cover). We do not recommend using bleach on any part of your dock - stain remover is preferred.
Cover: Machine wash on cold in a garment bag and hang to air dry.
Pad: Hand wash in cold water and lay flat to dry.
Tube: Machine wash inside a garment bag in cold, then tumble dry on low to dry. You can shake or fluff to redistribute the filling if necessary.
DELUXE: The baby should be always be placed in the dock with the head towards the top / head end of the dock and feet in the direction of the buckled end. Additionally, the infant should be placed towards the foot end of the dock with the buckle closed. This will give the baby an comforting sense of reassurance by feeling the closed tube with his feet. It also prevents the baby from wiggling downwards.
As the baby grows, they can be positioned higher up in the dock. Eventually the buckle can be unclipped as the child gets tall enough and his legs begin to outgrow the dock in the closed position. If you’re bed-sharing with the dock, take extra care about positioning in the adult bed and take care to make sure no adult duvets or pillows are near the dock, which could pose a risk for the baby. Ideally, each parent will use their own bedspread, instead of sharing a bedspread, as a parent might unintentionally pull the cover over the dock.
GRAND: Always unbuckle the legs of the Grand when in use. The child should be placed correctly in the dock, with the head towards the head end of the dock and feet in the direction of the open end of the dock. Always place your child at the top of the Grand.
The buckles on the bottom of the docks are carefully engineered to be self releasing at a pressure of 4.5 to 5 pounds. An infant shouldn't be able to kick it open but a toddler should be able to. Please keep in mind that the buckle must remain open when a child is in the Grand dock. The docks shouldn't be held by the buckle or the foot end as this may open the buckle, please use the carrying handle(s) on the dock instead.
If the buckle is repeatedly opened by forcing it open rather than pressing the release buttons this will most likely exhaust the buckle and make it open with less than 4.5 pounds of pressure.
The buckle is not meant for adults to use for carrying. For easy portability, we have included a handle on the side of the dock, which allows adults to carry the dock from place to place. When opening the buckle at the foot end, always make sure to press the release buttons rather than forcing the clips open, which could compromise the pressure threshold and result in the clips opening at a lower pressure.
The design of the cover was made to create a sturdy and firm dock. Firstly, the bumper needs to be firm enough to prevent children from rolling out, as well as preventing adults to roll onto the child when bed-sharing. Also, it must have the right bearing capacity to serve as a good tummy time aide.
The bumper density of the Grand is substantially lower. An older child can use the sides of the Grand as a pillow, hence the softer bumper.
We at DockATot recognize that many people believe strongly that infants and young children should never sleep with adults in their bed while others believe—equally strongly—that such co-sleeping provides valuable emotional benefits. Our founder is a passionate bed-sharer and co-slept with both of her boys when they were infants, using the dock. When used in an adult bed properly, DockATot is very safe for co-sleeping. Just make sure to follow these important instructions:
DockATot should always be placed in the middle of the bed (not near the sides) and at the top of the bed during co-sleeping.
DockATot and its protective sides facilitate correct back positioning while preventing the baby from rolling out of bed, hitting his head against the headboard, getting caught between the bed and the wall or wriggling down under the covers. The sides also help prevent parents from rolling on top of the baby. The sides are also comfy enough for the parent to have his/her arm over the side to pat and reassure the baby.
The DockATot must always be used in a child-safe and "supervised environment." A supervised environment is one in which a semi-alert, non-inebriated adult is co-sleeping next to baby. Adult does not need to be awake next to baby.
Co-sleeping with non-enibraited, semi-alert sleeping adult is considered safe supervised sleep for which the use of DockATot is approved.
Yes! You can definitely swaddle your baby for as long as it works for both of you. Once your baby is able to wiggle themselves out of a swaddle or able to sit up on their own we discourage swaddling.
Another great option is to use a sleep sack as an alternative to blankets.
Many parents want a specific cover that is only available as a spare cover. They don't want to have to purchase the complete dock, and an additional cover.
Thankfully, there's an easy workaround for this at no additional cost! You can design your own dock without having to buy an extra cover by buying the components separately. You'll just need to assemble the pieces once you've received them.
If buying a Deluxe dock, you'll need the following:
If you're buying a Grand dock, you'll need the following pieces:
